2007 Jerwood Sculpture Prize - Shortlist Press Release
17 January 2007
1991's intercity rail map re-presented to look like a tree; a sculpture that changes position with the seasons; an exhausted Mars slumped against the foliage; these are just three of the eight imaginative and striking works short listed for the £25,000 Jerwood Sculpture Prize in 2007.
This year there were an outstanding quality of entries for the Jerwood Sculpture Prize, and the judges have commissioned just eight entrants to make maquettes of their proposals. The Jerwood Charitable Foundation is delighted to announce that the following artists' ideas have been short listed:
Adam Burge Falling Away From The Perfect
William Clifford Home
Dallas Collins Sweet
Graham Guy Robinson Barrier Fence
Juliet Haysom Spring
Jonathan Parsons Terminator
Nathaniel Rackowe Running Light
Graham Seaton Composite
Now in its fourth year, the prize has built a strong reputation for quality and innovation. The Jerwood Charitable Foundation have been delighted by the success of the first three commissions from Benedict Carpenter, Gereon Krebber, and Judith Dean, and have high expectations for the fourth commission.
Other works shortlisted for this year's prize include a mist of water plumbed from a natural underground source; a sculpture you can walk into which uses moving light; a temporary fence made permanent; a skeleton of a house; and an enlarged concrete cast of industrial packaging material. Each of the sculptors has approached the task in a very different way, showing the diversity of thinking in modern sculpture.
Maquettes of the eight shortlisted proposals will be on exhibition in the Jerwood Space, Union Street, London SE1, from 18 April - 23 May 2007, open 10am - 5pm weekdays and 10am - 3pm weekends, and the winner of the £25,000 commission will be announced on 1 May. The winning sculptor will produce a large scale outdoor sculpture to be unveiled at the Jerwood Sculpture Park, in the grounds of Ragley Hall, Warwickshire in 2008. This prestigious prize is presented by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation, as part of their dedication to supporting and nurturing talented artists.
