Andrew Trotman - Installation of Jerwood Sculpture Seating

23 April 2007

A collection of seats designed and built by Andrew Trotman have been installed along the Jerwood Sculpture Trail at Ragley: Cambered Bench II, Springboard (Wishbone Bench II), Cochleate Bench, Reciprocity, Zigzag Bench and Bloom.

The six seats are constructed mainly from Green Oak felled on the estate and cut at Ragley's Timber Mill. They provide points of rest along the two mile Sculpture Trail and allow visitors to enjoy views across the 400 acre park landscaped by Lancelot ‘Capability' Brown in the eighteenth century.

Andrew explains that each seat is designed to explore a different manner of sitting, ‘giving a variety of ways in which visitors can interact with the piece itself, each other and the views. Seating is only partly about sitting down - the experience should be active; the designs are intended to be thought provoking, tactile and often playful'.

Combining a background in structural engineering and a passion for working with wood, Andrew established TimberWright in 2004 to design and make bespoke structures and furniture with a fresh approach to form and function. His designs explore structured and geometric forms that interpret the landscape and express characteristics of balance, stress, light and texture.
