Jerwood Studio at Glyndebourne
Jerwood Studio at Glyndebourne, Lewes, East Sussex
Architects: Michael Hopkins & Partners
Opened in July 2001
In 2001 the Jerwood Foundation made a grant of £1 million towards Glyndebourne Festival Opera's second stage area, adjoining the new opera house which opened in 1994. The Jerwood Studio at Glyndebourne was, like the award winning main theatre, designed by Michael Hopkins & Partners and it opened in July 2001.
The Jerwood Studio at Glyndebourne is equivalent in size to the main stage. It provides rehearsal facilities for Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Glyndebourne Touring Opera productions, as well as the Youth Opera productions run by Glyndebourne's Education Department. The Jerwood Studio has also been used as a performance stage for the Glyndebourne Chorus. 80% of the Studio's programme is devoted to young singers.
Glyndebourne Festival Opera
Glyndebourne Festival Opera was founded in 1934 by John Christie at his 700 year old family home near Lewes in East Sussex and in 1968 Glyndebourne Touring Opera was established. A new award winning opera house opened at Glyndebourne in 1994. Glyndebourne has traditionally provided a stepping stone for young singers coming out of the colleges of music, engaging them for work in the Festival Chorus and as understudies. Ideally these young singers graduate to soloist status on its annual tours and some to principal status in the Festival.
Glyndebourne's Jerwood Chorus Development Scheme is supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.
